When it comes to writing, I try to keep my goals pretty simple. After-all, this is something I like to do and I don't want to ruin that by making it all about reaching goals, but they are still important to me.
Last year I set a goal to get published and I started submitting my poems to small indie publishers to dip my toes in. Out of the handful I submitted to, only 1 turned me away. It was an incredible feeling! I like knowing my poems are out there in the world finding homes in the hearts of different people that happen to read them. Writing for me is all about sharing in the experience. But did any of these publishers pay me for my writing? Nope. And that's totally ok. Baby steps, ya know?
So this year I set a new goal - submit my work to publishers that pay. Was my writing good enough for someone to pay for it? I really wanted to know. And then last month, it happened. I received an email saying just that. Not only did a publisher love one of my poems, they wanted to pay me for it. Talk about thrilling. Am I in this for the money? Of course not. I will keep writing my little poems no matter what happens with publishers, but me-oh-my it sure felt good. So if you're a writer and you're wondering the same thing, I encourage you to submit your writing to publishers. You never know what might happen and you could find yourself filled with glee when you get an acceptance email just like I did. It's worth putting your work out there. Reach out to me if you would like some recommendations for publishers - I'm happy to help! <3
